Mommy and Adara enjoyed some quality (no little brothers allowed) time together at their first parent/tot gymnastics class this morning. Adara's been more and more interested in gross motor activities lately (jumping (off the top of her step stool), hanging (from the dining room table)) so, I thought this would be a fun chance to get some of that energy out in a more appropriate manner.
When we walked in there was a big window through which you could see the entire gym. Adara ran over to it and said "I want to go in there!" lol, good start. :) We went in and they had us sit in a circle to stretch. Adara followed the teachers directions very well!
Our first activity was a little floor obstacle course. Adara got to try out doing forward rolls, climbing over a "mountain," jumping, hanging from a small bar and walking across a wide beam. She did very well, but after one round kept trying to run off to the "foam blocks" (the pit), lol.
After floor we went to beam and did a few passes forward, sideways and kicking on a beam that was about 2 inches off the ground. She did really well and maybe next class I'll be able to convince her to take some steps without holding onto my hand. ;)
After bean we went to bars and she got to hang and swing like a monkey and touch her toes to the bar (a good tummy muscle work out!).
Finally, we got the ok to head into the pit! Yeah! For those who are not familiar, a pit is a big, well, pit, filled up with soft 12" foam blocks (think of a very large ball pit but with foam blocks in it instead of plastic balls). Gymnasts use the pit as a place for a soft landing when learning new skills. For a 2 year old, it's apparently the equivalent of a giant foam pool. She loved it and was able to navigate through it very well. Mommy went in and climbed around too. :)
After the pit, the kids were allowed to bounce on the tumbling track (a long trampoline). Adara kept trying to get back in the pit, though, lol. Then it was time to sit in a circle again and say our goodbyes.
I was very impressed with Adara's ability to follow direction and imitate movements. Another surprise was her total lack of any shyness - way to go Adara! She was also very interested in the class of parent-free 3 year olds that was going on at the same time. Can't wait for next week! I'll try to get some pictures at a future class as well (For now you'll have to settle for this one of her with her name tag).
